A digital platform for community journalism in Burnley - designed, built, and handed over.
Burnley ViewPoint is a hyperlocal journalism project built on participation rather than readership alone. Developed through Burnley Words Festival, it provides local writers, artists, photographers and residents with a platform to document the town as they experience it.
The brief extended beyond designing a website. The challenge was building a platform that the community could genuinely own — not simply contribute to.
Alongside the design and development of the site, I delivered workshops in creative writing, journalism, photography and design, giving participants the skills and confidence to shape both the publication and the stories it would tell. The project concluded with Webflow training for the editorial team, ensuring the platform could continue to evolve independently long after launch.
The site launched in December 2024 and now hosts poetry, photography and journalism produced by and for the community it serves.
Supported by Levelling Up, Burnley Council, Burnley Words Festival, and Burnley Leisure & Culture.
